Postdoctoral position (m/f/d) | Synthetic Biology

Structural and Cell Biology Physiology Chemistry

Job Code: 29/2024

Job Offer from June 24, 2024

The Department of Systemic Cell Biology (Prof. Dr. Bastiaens) at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund is offering a postdoctoral position in synthetic biology (m/f/d) to work in a multidisciplinary team on reconstituting life-like processes by encapsulation of (bio)chemical polymers and enzymes.

In the context of studying how living cells perceive and react to their environment in dependence on their history, the Department of Systemic Cell Biology generates morphogenic systems by encapsulation of  interacting dynamic (bio)chemical polymers and enzymatic activities in operational closure (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-21679-2). The candidate will build on this work on reconstituting self-referencing biochemical networks to create replicating life-like systems.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, inquisitive and creative team player with a PhD in biophysics, physical chemistry, chemical biology or biochemistry to join our team. The candidate should preferentially have additional experience with any of the following disciplines: protein (bio)chemistry, enzymology, physical chemistry of lipid assemblies, reconstitution of dynamic (bio)chemical systems. She/he should have a keen interest in studying how (bio)chemical reaction dynamics at a deformable boundary generate morphodynamic patterns that contain information on a changing environment. Ideally, the candidate has also knowledge about photonics and advanced image processing.

The position is available immediately and is limited to 2 years with the possibility of prolongation. Financial compensation will be carried out according to the public service remuneration scheme TVöD.
