Postdoctoral Positions (f/m/d) in Solar Physics

Young Researchers Göttingen
Astronomy & Astrophysics

Job Code: Sun: PeterTeriaca- Postdoc 08/24

Job Offer from August 14, 2024

The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Göttingen is one of the world's leading research institutions in the field of solar physics and planetary research with around 300 employees. The interdisciplinary research focus is the investigation of the development, diversity and dynamics of planets, moons, small bodies, the sun and solar-like stars. The MPS develops and operates scientific instruments for current and future space missions (e.g. ESA, NASA), and carries out cosmochemical laboratory investigations of meteorites as well as numerical modeling on state-of-the-art supercomputers.

For the current NASA/JAXA/ESA missions MUSE, SOLAR-C_EUVST, Solar Orbiter and Proba-3 we are offering

Postdoctoral Positions (f/m/d) in Solar Physics.

Main focus of the positions will be on the solar corona. Understanding the corona requires a multidisciplinary approach that includes the realization and analysis of observations (from ground and, in particular, from space) and numerical modelling of the various coronal environments. With its significant contribution to current and future space missions, access to state-of-the-art computational facilities, and with its international, leading scientists, MPS offers an ideal environment for successful research and provides the opportunity to realize own ideas.

Your Tasks

  • Conducting leading-edge research in the field of coronal physics
  • Combining and analyzing spectroscopic and imaging data from multiple ground and space observatories
  • Publication of the results in scientific journals and presentation at international conferences

Your Qualification

  • PhD (or soon to be expected PhD) in solar physics or a closely related field
  • Experience in the processing and analysis of spectroscopic and/or imaging data from solar space missions
  • Experience with numerical modelling will be a bonus

Additional Information

  • The positions are to be filled as soon as possible and for a period of two years
  • An extension may be possible depending on performance and availability of funding
  • The position is rated EG 13 TVöD-Bund
  • An individual travel budgets for conferences, etc. will be provided
  • Review of applications will start on 27 September 2024 and continue until the positions are filled

Your Application

We look forward to receiving your informative application documents (cover letter, CV, certificates, publication list, a statement of research interests -max. 2 pages- and the names and contact details of two scientists willing to provide reference letters).

Please submit these via the digital application portal (https://www.mps.mpg.de/karriere/stellenangebote).

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Prof. Dr. Hardi Peter (peter@mps.mpg.de) or Dr. Luca Teriaca ().
