About the Institute

The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is a leading international research institute that uses biophysical, biochemical and computational methods to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of cellular systems at the molecular scale. It consists of four scientific departments, multiple research groups and scientific core facilities, with about 250 employees and guests from more than 40 countries.

The Image Processing group in the Department of Molecular Sociology aim to facilitate in situ structural analysis by developing novel algorithms for cryo electron tomography and subtomogram averaging. Our method development focuses on contextual analysis of tomograms using information provided either directly within the tomograms or by other sources (molecular dynamics, mass spectrometry), see our Python-based package “Contextual Analysis Tools for cryo electron tomography” called cryoCAT (github.com/turonova/cryoCAT).

Your qualification

  • Bachelor-Degree
  • Strong programming skills and/or proficiency in Phyton
  • Experience with unit tests is a plus
  • Proficiency in English

Our offer

The Department of Molecular Sociology advertises a student assistan position with potential continuation as a master thesis.

Topic: Improving and maintaining the tools for contextual analysis within cryoCAT package.

The working hours per week and contract duration will be subject to an individual agreement but with a maximum of 20 hours per week and 80 hours per month, starting as early as possible. Candidates seeking long term contracts (e.g. for one year and longer) will be prioritized in the selection process (Student Assistant contracts are concluded per semester with a valid certificate of enrollment). There is a possibility for an extension to a Master project. The work can be done fully remotely and with flexible working hours during the day but due to the regulations of payroll requirements the place of residence need to be within Germany.
