The Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt am Main is a growing research institution in the field of biological/medical basic research, focusing specifically on the functioning of neural circuits. The institute currently has around 220 employees and consists of three research departments, several junior research groups, and various service units. The Imaging Facility provides expertise and equipment for all modern microscopic techniques for the entire institute. In addition to supporting day-to-day scientific work, we develop and establish new methods in the field of optics and microscopy to advance science beyond what is currently possible. We are seeking a Scientist (m/f/d) in full-time to cover parental leave from January 01, 2025, for a period of 6 months.

This is a great opportunity learn how to use a large variety of microscopes in our excellently equipped facility, and to gain experience with working in an imaging facility.

Your responsibilities

  • Theoretical and practical training for our employees
  • Supervision of employees in their work on the microscopes
  • Maintenance and quality control on our microscopes

Your profile

  • Graduation (Bachelor, Master, Diploma or higher) in physics or life sciences
  • Knowledge of principles and methods in the field of microscopy
  • Experience in working with commercial microscopes, especially confocal laser scanning microscopes
  • Very good knowledge of English
  • High level of motivation and personal responsibility as well as organizational skills
  • Experience of working in a team

The following additional qualifications are an advantage:

  • Experience in characterization of microscope performance as well as in handling common measuring instruments (powermeter, spectrometer)
  • Experience with data analysis in a programming language (especially of image data), ideally with Matlab
  • Experience with software packages for image processing(e.g. ImageJ, Imaris, Arivis, Amira)
  • Preparation of biological samples for light microscopy
  • Work in another imaging or microscopy facility
