AI research under pressure: key figures

  • From 2005 to 2015, the EU led the world in scientific AI publications, accounting for 37%, followed by China at 34% and the USA at 29%. However, despite a steady rise in European Research Council (ERC)-funded AI projects, Europe has since fallen behind. By 2021, China had overtaken both the EU (30%) and the USA (28%), contributing 42% of global AI publications (Source: Heitor Report).
  • Since 2007, the ERC has invested over two billion euros in groundbreaking AI research. The share of ERC-funded AI projects relative to all ERC-funded projects has steadily grown, reaching nearly 15% by 2021.
  • The Max Planck Society (MPG) has long been a leader in European AI research, notably through initiatives like Cyber Valley and the ELLIS Institutes. In 2023, Nature ranked the MPG sixth among the world’s Top 10 Rising Institutions in Artificial Intelligence, alongside Harvard, MIT, and six prominent Chinese institutions.
