Journalist (m/f/d) in Residence Fellowship

Scientist Cologne
Social Sciences
Job Offer from March 28, 2025

The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) in Cologne offers experienced journalists (f/m/d) an opportunity to take up a guest residency at the Institute as part of its Journalist in Residence Fellowship.

The MPIfG conducts basic research on the governance of modern societies by investigating the interrelation between economic, social, and political action. It examines how markets and business organizations are embedded in historical, political, and cultural frameworks, how they develop, and how their social contexts change over time. In exploring these and other questions, the Institute seeks to build a bridge between theory and policy and to contribute to political debate on major challenges facing modern societies.

The Journalist in Residence Fellowship is open to staff or freelance journalists who have several years of professional experience, regularly cover academic or political, social, or economic topics, and wish to work on their own research project in dialogue with the Institute’s researchers. The MPIfG offers guest residencies of between six weeks’ and three months’ duration and a grant of up to 3,500 euros per month to cover private living expenses. During their residency, journalists have an office at the MPIfG and access to the Institute’s extensive library and research resources.

A collaborative and collegial working environment is integral to the MPIfG. Starting from the application process, we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all of our employees. The compatibility of career and family is also one of our key concerns, as is the employment of people with disabilities.

If you are interested in joining us, we look forward to receiving your application as a single PDF containing your CV, up to five relevant samples of your work, a project proposal of up to two pages for the residency, a letter of recommendation from your editor-in-chief or an editorial office you regularly work with, and an indication of the preferred length and timeframe for your stay. When you are ready to apply, please follow the link to our online portal to upload your application.

The Journalist in Residence Fellowship is advertised once a year. More information about the Fellowship. The deadline for applications is May 4, 2025.
