The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Göttingen is one of the world's leading research institutions in the field of solar physics and planetary research with around 300 employees. The interdisciplinary research focus is the investigation of the development, diversity and dynamics of planets, moons, small bodies, the sun and solar-like stars.

The MPS develops and operates scientific instruments for current and future space missions (e.g. ESA, NASA), and carries out cosmochemical laboratory investigations of meteorites as well as numerical modeling on state-of-the-art supercomputers.

For the development of the Photospheric Magnetic field Imager PMI for the ESA’s Vigil mission, the institute is looking for a Software Engineer (f/m/d).

Your tasks

As a software engineer you will join a team tasked with the design and implementation of software for the control of scientific experiments in space conditions and related analysis software.

Your qualification

  • University degree (Bachelor, Master or equivalent) in the areas of informatics, information technology, or related fields
  • Strong command of the C or C++ programming language
  • Experience in the development of concurrent software systems
  • Familiarity with Linux or Windows operating systems for software development
  • Strong physical and technical comprehension
  • Willingness to participate in international business trips

Advantageous would be experience with/knowledge of

  • Embedded systems based on LEON3 processors
  • RTEMS operating system
  • C++ library ACE
  • The processes of software development according to ECSS

Additional information

  • The full-time position is to be filled as soon as possible and limited for 2 years, with the possibility of extension.
  • The remuneration will be in accordance with TVöD-Bund up to EG 13, if the objective and subjective classification requirements are met. This will be assessed separately on the basis of the respective professional qualifications and previous professional experience and should not necessarily be expected.
