The Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is an internationally leading research institution in the fields of structural biology, biophysics and cell biology located at the center of the Frankfurt science campus. It consists of four scientific departments, multiple research groups and scientific core facilities, with about 200 employees from more than 40 countries. It is located at the Campus Riedberg in Frankfurt am Main.
About the department
The research group of “Structure and Dynamics of Chromosomes” led by Eugene Kim at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics is seeking for highly motivated PhD student and Postdoctoral Researcher (2 positions – f/m/d) to study genome organizing macromolecules, including Structural Maintenance of Chromosome (SMC) complexes, using in vitro biochemical and biophysical approaches. Specifically, we seek for the candidates for the following projects
- Cryo-electron microscopy-based structural analysis of SMC-nucleic acid interactions (the candidate with prior experience in structure biology and protein expression and modification is preferred. Experience in programming is a plus.)
- TIRF-based single molecule analysis of SMC motor proteins (the candidate with prior experience in quantitative (imaging) data analysis is preferred. Prior experience in microscopy is desired but not required.)
- Development of 3D diffusion-based single-molecule sensors (the candidate with theoretical knowledge and hands on experience in optics is preferred. Prior experience in development/extension of optical instrument and/or surface chemistry is desired.)
Your profile
- The candidate has (or is expected to have) MSc degree in relevant field of science.
- A creative and independent individual with a strong motivation in fundamental research.
- Proficiency in English (both speaking and writing)
It is essential for the candidate to have (or close to complete) a PhD/ Dr. rer. nat./DPhil in related field of science. The candidate will have a proven ability to deliver high quality novel research, for example through journal publications. You have a good understanding of how to conduct a successful research and develop new avenues of research independently.
