Job Offer from May 31, 2024

The Max Planck Society is Germany's premier research organization. The 86 Max Planck Institutes conduct research at highest levels, in the service of the general public, in the natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities.

The Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD) is located at the Science Campus Hamburg-Bahrenfeld and investigates dynamical phenomena within matter down to the elementary timescales of atomic and electronic motions, the femtosecond or attosecond timescale. The focus is on the use of short wavelength ultrafast probes, such as X-rays or electron pulses, which are capable of measuring atomic and electronic structures in matter of all kinds.

The MPSD currently consists of three scientific departments focusing on solid state physics and theoretical methods in these fields. The MPSD is a partner in the Center for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL), collaborating with the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY), European XFEL (EuXFEL) and the University of Hamburg in the development of science based on the X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs).

For our new department "Microstructured Quantum Matter" we are looking for a

Engineer for Electron Microscopy and Focused Ion Beam Systems (FIB) (m/f/d)

Your position

The position is a central one within the group as it is responsible for important infrastructure for microstructuring and analysis in our lab. It will be an interplay between technical development, scientific support, teaching and maintenance aspects.

The group operates a platform of FIB systems with the capability to microstructure quantum matter from millimeter to nanometric features. This platform is comprised of a dual beam Ga-SEM system as well as a tri-beam Multi-Species-Plasma-FIB - SEM – Femtosecond Laser from Thermo Fisher Scientific and an Orion Helium / Neon / Gallium microscope from Zeiss. The platform will be extended with cryo-FIB capabilities in the coming months. All systems come with service contracts and close collaboration with the manufacturer.

We seek a creative mind to develop new techniques and/or support new techniques in collaboration with students, postdocs or visitors is key to solving scientific problems and a vital part of this job. All systems come with Python Autoscript to allow for automization as well as additional upgrades like multiple micromanipulators and thermal platforms. The develop of new micro-structuring techniques or more complex structures is key to our research.

The main task is the weekly user-alignment of all systems and organize with the companies on service visits and implementation of upgrades. To enable a smooth and uninterrupted operation is the most important task of this role.

Teaching is a key aspect of this position, including the introduction of new group members to the systems. A standard curriculum shall be developed and needs to be adjusted when new capabilities are added. The aim is to implement a standardized training for all users.

An additional aspect of the work allows the successful candidate to carry out standard characterization procedures as part of a collaboration and to investigate samples that require electrical measurements of microstructured devices. This is an opportunity to work with a wide range of materials, topics, and questions both inside and outside the institute. This is done in close collaboration with the team that the low temperature - high magnetic field platform and the clean room team.

Your qualification

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic person to work in a vibrant international environment with the aim to test and push the limits of state of the art microstructuring capabilities. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in physics, mechanical or electrical engineering.

Solid knowledge is required in the field of electron microscopy and focused ion beam systems. A university degree in either field is desirable but not required. Knowledge in programming language Phyton is advantageous. Prior experience in preparation of TEM lamellae, EDS and TEM sample analysis is beneficial. Prior experience in alignment procedures in Zeiss and Thermo Fisher electron and ion beam columns is highly beneficial.

The successful candidate must have the ability to work and collaborate within an international diverse team.

Working at MPSD requires the applicant to be fluent in English. Proficiency in German is preferred.

Our offer

We offer an innovative environment, which will give you the opportunity to develop your own ideas in a low temperature high magnetic field facility in combination with state of the art micro machining capabilities. We offer an attractive remuneration up to TVöD E12 according to the German public pay scale (TVöD). The appointment is for two years with the possibility to be made permanent.

The Max Planck Society strives for gender equality and diversity. We welcome applications from all background.

The Max-Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

Your application

To apply please complete the online application form and attach you English CV and motivation letter as well as all relevant certificates latest 1st of July, 2024.

Detailed information about the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter can be found at MPSD.

We look forward to your application.
