Join the Max Planck Computing and Data Facility (MPCDF), a competence centre of the Max Planck Society (MPG), located on the research campus Garching near Munich, Germany. The MPCDF operates supercomputers and data repositories for the MPG and is engaged in the development and optimization of algorithms and applications for high performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as in the design and implementation of solutions for data-intensive projects in close collaboration with the Max Planck Institutes. The MPCDF, in collaboration with the Theory Department of Prof. Angel Rubio at the Max Planck Institute for Structure and Dynamics of Matter, is looking for a HPC applications expert (f/m/d), Reference 2024/06

The successful candidate will be associated with the applications group at the MPCDF and will work on the development and optimization of new methods in the electronic-structure software package octopus (www.octopus-code.org) and related applications, with a focus on their extension to exascale HPC architectures (e.g. GPU-accelerated clusters), and in close collaboration with domain scientists and application developers at the Max Planck Institute for Structure and Dynamics of Matter.

Your profile

  • Strong background in scientific software development and parallel programming, ideally with modern Fortran, C or C++ together with MPI, OpenMP and GPU programming models
  • Some experience with High Performance Computing, e.g., profiling applications
  • A PhD in Physics, applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a similar subject is desired but not mandatory
  • Ability for focused and autonomous work on a large complex code
  • A background in numerical methods is a plus

The full-time position starts as soon as possible and is initially limited for a maximum period of three years. Salary will be based on experience according to the German TVöD E13.
