The Computational Methods in Systems and Control Theory group at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg is inviting applications as a Research Software Engineer (m/f/d).

The position is part of the third-party funded NFDI Consortium “Mathematical Research Data Initiative” (MaRDI), representing the field of mathematics in the German National Research Data Initiative (NFDI). MaRDI’s designated goal is to realize the FAIR Data Principles across the entire field of mathematics and its applications. Our goal is the development of a benchmark framework for the evaluation and comparison of emerging algorithms on predefined test sets using comparable metrics. This includes developments of metadata and ontologies as well as the development of appropriate software tools in the context of Model Order Reduction and related fields of the Computational Sciences and Engineering. The position is part of the third measure of task area 2 (Scientific Computing) in the MaRDI consotium. We refer to the MaRDI proposal for further details.

While the central duty is to further the development of the new Python version of the benchmark tool, the successful candidate is also expected to support the project in administrative MaRDI meetings, and in work groups of the NFDI.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in mathematics or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the areas of
    – Research data management and research software engineering.
    – Knowledge of partial differential equation numerics and scientific computing.
    – Knowledge of model order reduction and surrogate modeling.
  • Ability to perform independent scientific work, problem solving, and presentation of results.
  • Technical skills:
    – Fluency in Python and Python workflows (incl. packaging) is mandatory
    – Substantial knowledge in MATLAB/Octave, Julia is helpful.
    – CI/CD in GitLab highly desirable.
    – HTML/MediWiki skills are optional.
    – SparQL is recommended for integration with the other MaRDI services.
